It is a complex of Mayan ruins located in the center of the northern of the Yucatan Peninsula. In pre-Columbian times, Chichen Itza was a vibrant city with a diverse population of Mayan communities. Today, the site houses the remains of many ancient Mayan structures, including the famous pyramid of El Castillo that dominates the center of the archaeological site.
Tulum is located 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen. The ruins are small but impressive, located above a small cliff limiting the blue-turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The ruins of Tulum have one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya. The biggest attraction of Tulum is the combination of the imposing ruins with the amazing shades of the Caribbean Sea. Tulum in Mayan means "wall" since it is a walled city, one of the very few ancestral cities with this defensive building.
